The Young Life
  • Tolstoy was born in Yasnaya, Polyana-in the Tula region of Russia.
  • He was born into a well-known family and was the fourth child out of five. He was the most influential member of his family.

When Tolstoy was a young child, his parents passed away forcing him to be brought up by his relatives. He lived his young years with his relatives and in 1844, he went to Kazan University to study law and oriental languages.Tolstoy did not excel in academics. One of his professors said he was "unable and unwilling to learn." In conclusion, he did not finish school.

Around 1851, Tolstoy joined the army; this is when he began writing. He also traveled to Europe in 1857, and also in 1860-61. Both of these adventures greatly influenced his life along with his writing. An example of an impacting experience while he was away was he got to meet Victor Hugo.

  • Two of his most famous writing are War and Peace and Anna Karenina.
  • His writings depict the 19th century Russian life and attitudes.
  • He was an essayist, dramatist, and an educational reformer.
  • Tolstoy taught the teachings of Jesus, centering around the Sermon on the Mount, causing him to become a Christian anarchist.
  • He founded 13 schools and founded one school that can notably be claimed to be the first example of a democratic education.
